Des Moines Water Works’ (DMWW) benefits program is designed to improve employees’ quality of life and provide security for the future. We strive to bring you quality benefits that meet the diverse needs of our workforce.

DMWW offers a comprehensive benefits package for employees regularly working 20 hours or more per week. Benefits are prorated for employees working between 20-39 hours per week.

Benefits include vacation, sick leave, life insurance and AD&D, health, dental and vision insurance, Iowa Public Employees' Retirement System (IPERS), long term disability, tuition reimbursement and an employee assistance program.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

MEDICAL INSURANCE

DMWW has partnered with the Iowa Governmental Health Care Plan to offer a choice of three different health plans through Wellmark.  

Summaries of Benefits and Coverage (SBC) can be received by contacting the Human Resources Office at 515-283-8700.

The SBC is a standardized document detailing simple and consistent information about the health plan benefits and coverages we carry. It includes key features of the plan, such as covered benefits, co-payment/co-insurance amounts and sample coverage examples.

EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (EAP)
Employee Assistance Program providing confidential and professional counseling sessions for stress, work/life balance, and substance abuse. FLEXIBLE SPENDING ACCOUNTS
Pre-tax deduction for out-of-pocket medical expenses and/or dependent care expenses. Medical Expense Accounts: $3,200 maximum for 2024 and Dependent Care Accounts: $5,000 maximum for 2023.

INCOME PROTECTION

SICK LEAVE
Employees are credited with 24 hours after 3 months employment, then accrue 3.7 hours per pay thereafter. No accrual limit.


TERM-LIFE INSURANCE

Coverage is an amount equal to the employees’ annual salary rounded to the next $500. Coverage also includes accidental death and dismemberment for the employee’s salary amount. Coverage is through Voya.

LONG-TERM DISABILITY
Coverage pays 60% of salary after 6 months of disability. Coverage is through Voya. Employee elects taxable or tax-free benefits

SUPPLEMENTAL LIFE INSURANCE
Additional term-life insurance may be purchased for yourself, your spouse or your children through post-tax payroll deductions

RETIREMENT BENEFITS

IOWA PUBLIC EMPLOYEE’S RETIREMENT SYSTEM (IPERS)

IPERS is a sustainable and affordable defined benefit pension retirement plan that provides members with secure income, supports self-sufficiency in retirement, and contributes to local economies. IPERS benefits are designed to supplement personal savings and Social Security benefits in retirement.

DEFINED CONTRIBUTION

Employees can defer pre-tax income into investment options for retirement. Maximum contribution will be $23,000 in 2024. A qualified individual who is age 50 or older may contribute up to $7,500 additional income in 2023. 
DMWW will match $1.00 to every $2.00 employee contribution up to a percentage of base pay and shift differential according to the following service schedule.  The program is administered by Principal Financial Group.

WORK/LIFE BALANCE

VACATION
Vacation:  Employees are credited with 20 hours after 3 months employment, then accrue per pay as follows:

  • 3 mos  to    5 yrs: 3.08 hrs. (2 weeks/yr.) - maximum accrual 120 hours
  •  5 yrs    to  12 yrs:  4.62 hrs. (3 weeks/yr.) - maximum accrual 180 hours
  • 12 yrs   to   19 yrs:  6.16 hrs. (4 weeks/yr.) - maximum accrual 240 hours
  • 19 yrs   or    more: 7.70 hrs. (5 weeks/yr.) - maximum accrual 300 hours

 Employees are allowed to purchase additional vacation time each benefit year.

HOLIDAYS
New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and the day after, Christmas and the day before or after, and five floating holidays for full time employees.  The five floating holidays are credited on January 1 each year. 
Floating holidays are pro-rated for new hires and also for part time employees based on their scheduled hours. 

SICK LEAVE
Employees are credited with 24 hours after 3 months employment, then accrue 3.7 hours per pay thereafter. No accrual limit.
BEREAVEMENT LEAVE
One to five working days for each death in the family. Please refer to the Employee Handbook for details.

SCHOOL & TRAINING EXPENSES
Pre-payment or reimbursement of tuition and training expenses for job-related coursework

JOB SHADOWING/CROSS TRAINING
