Des Moines Water Works (DMWW) wants to provide you information that clearly defines our services and procedures, so as our customer, we will be able to serve you in a timely and efficient manner.

It can be tricky to determine who is responsible for what when it comes to water service lines. DMWW is committed to serving you, and wants you to know exactly what we can do for you.

We are responsible for providing water to our customers and maintaining the water mains required to deliver water to homes and businesses. We also own the water meter used to measure how much water a customer uses.

You, the property owner, are responsible for the connection (tap) to the water main and the piping (service line) that carries the water from the water main to the water meter. You, as a customer, are also responsible to protect and provide access to the water meter.

When a problem occurs, DMWW will assist in determining the cause of the problem and the appropriate course of action.  Contact DMWW at 515.283.8700 if you need assistance.

In certain situations, customers may apply  to stub and reuse their water service line. 

Water Service Line Coverage

Des Moines Water Works offers a low-cost water service line coverage program available through HomeServe USA (HomeServe). This optional coverage offers protection for water service line breaks for single-family residents in the City of Des Moines and Des Moines Water Works’ total service areas.

Many customers don’t realize the entire exterior water service line that connects your home with Des Moines Water Works’ water main is your responsibility as a homeowner. If you were unfortunate enough to suffer a break in this line, or discover an inoperable shutoff valve, it would be up to you to find a plumber and face potentially costly repairs. To provide homeowners with an option, Des Moines Water Works has selected HomeServe to provide homeowners with a plan that protects them from costs associated with repairs to their water service line.
