Des Moines Water Works has been made aware of a scam where a person is calling customers from an unknown number stating they are past due on their water bill. The scammer gives a fake balance and requests a credit card number to pay the balance.
While Des Moines Water Works does place automated courtesy calls prior to termination advising customers of delinquent balances and pending service disconnections, Des Moines Water Works will never call customers demanding payment by credit card. In addition, Des Moines Water Works always provides a notice of possible disconnection for nonpayment 10 days prior to the disconnect date.
If you are uncertain about your account status, call Des Moines Water Works Customer Service at 283-8700. If you have fallen victim of this scam, please call the Des Moines Police Department and report it immediately.
