MONITORING VIOLATION OF THE WATER TESTING SCHEDULE
Our water system violated a drinking water standard this fall. Even though it was not an emergency, as our customers, you have a right to know what happened and what we did to correct the situation.
Des Moines Water Works maintains and operates the Greenbrier Estates water supply, and is required to monitor your drinking water for specific contaminants on a regular basis. Results of regular monitoring are an indicator of whether or not our drinking water meets health standards. In August we did not monitor or test Total Trihalomethanes (TTHM) and Haloacetic Acids (HAA5) and therefore cannot be sure of the quality of our drinking water during that time.
What should I do?
There is nothing you need to do at this time.
What happened? What is being done?
An administrative error caused Des Moines Water Works to miss the annual collection of samples and required testing for TTHM and HAA5 on the scheduled August date. Samples were collected and tested on October 17. The results (see below) of the October sample confirmed that water in the system remains safe for consumption. These results are consistent with prior years sampling and results from other systems throughout the summer and fall. From these results, Des Moines Water Works has no reason to believe water was unsafe to drink at the time the annual sample should have been taken.
In the future, Des Moines Water Works will eliminate the possibility for administrative oversight by collecting samples and performing testing of the Greenbrier Estates water supply on a quarterly schedule consistent with the other three public water supplies managed by Des Moines Water Works.
