Engineering

Who is Engineering?

Engineering provides design and construction inspection for our capital improvements program. This includes:
  • New facilities like treatment plants, aquifer storage and recovery wells, etc.
  • New and replacement water mains in our distribution system.
  • Replacement of existing equipment like finished water pumps, lime feed system, etc.
  • Maintenance of existing buildings like brick repair, roof replacement, etc.
Engineering maintains the record drawings of all of our capital projects so we have all the information on what was constructed. We take the lead on working with contractors and developers, on all water service connections that are 2-inch and larger. Engineering conducts long-range-plans for water resources, water treatment, and water distribution to make sure we are poised to meet the growing demand for water into the future.

The Engineering Team:

We have eight engineers, five engineering technicians, one engineering analyst, three drafters and two support staff. The engineers include one director, one engineering supervisor, three project managers, one infrastructure planning manager, one PE engineer and one staff engineer. Seven of the eight engineers are registered professional engineers. All five of the engineering technicians have State of Iowa Water Distribution System certificates.

What it’s Like to Work in Engineering at DMWW:

We have a good variety of projects which provides different work for engineering staff. A typical cycle for a capital project is to:
  • Gather all the required information regarding the current condition of the project site.
  • Generate the design drawing with the current information.
  • Generate the design plans and specifications for bidding the capital project.
  • Monitor the construction of the project to ensure the contractor follows the plans and specifications for the project.
  • Generate the record drawings for the project, showing how the project was constructed.
Each capital project will be designed and built by a team from engineering. Each team will have some engineers, an engineering technician, and a drafter to complete the design and construction of the project.
