Leak Detection

Annually Des Moines Water Works completes a leak survey of the entire distribution system using ultrasonic leak detection equipment.  The survey is completed using two techniques; hydrant top survey and valve top survey.  Hydrant top survey is faster but provides a somewhat less comprehensive survey.  The more traditional valve top survey is more comprehensive and takes more time to complete.  One half of the system is surveyed using hydrant top survey techniques and the other half is surveyed using valve top survey.  The following year each half of the system is surveyed using the opposite technique.  Each year more than 100 leaks are confirmed and repaired saving as much as one hundred million gallons of water.

Currently Des Moines Water Works also provides leak detection services to the following municipalities: Ankeny, Clive, Indianola, Johnston, and Urbandale.
